Sheila Johnson, who played a pivotal role in founding Back Entertainment Television, is helping to increase diversity in golf. Johnson is the first black woman on the United States Golf Association’s 15-member executive committee. Before she made history on the USGA, Johnson made an investment in athletic teams by purchasing the Washington Mystics, and became the vice chairman of a group that owns the Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals. What Johnson can teach us about diversity is how she demonstrates her ability to take risks. Johnson’s first access to golf came after she purchased a golf resort. Now the luxury resort, Innisbrook Resort and Spa, is a top-ranked course in the country. Johnson is committed to fostering minority contacts with golf and represents a voice who can help shift the atmosphere.
