One of the reasons why I wanted to write this blog was to inspire children to believe they can reach their goals, despite the obstacles that surround them. Golf is a largely competitive sport; participation by minorities is about 5.5 million. According to African American Golf Digest, golf represents an untapped pool of an emerging demand, but participation among African Americans is growing. Currently, 3.4 million African Americans are committed regular golfers.
Opportunities exist for junior golfers, who make up part of 2.1 million. Doors to college are being opened to golf caddies. The Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship is a full tuition and housing scholarship for golf caddies that is renewable up to four years. Each year, more than 800 caddies attend college on full tuition and housing grants from the Evans Scholars Foundation. Selected candidates must meet the requirements of having a strong caddie record, excellent academics, outstanding character and financial need. Since 1930, more than 10,000 men and women have been awarded Evans Scholarships.
